| Mt Shuksan from Huntoon Point, 2011 |
This lovely picture stuck out of my collection as I went rummaging around in my files for some inspiration as to what to write about. As I examined some of the brilliant memories that I have gathered during my years hiking in the Pacific Northwest wilderness, this one was taken on a snowshoe trip with some other Tsraillazers, probably on a Thursday, up to Huntoon Point, where we often went when looking for some adventure, but not too much.
I can still remember the feeling of being out there in the snow and sunshine, and seeing the bird overhead that kept eyeing us. It would get quite close, but would fly away if I moved too auickly toward it. On another outing, I had seen one of these camp robbers snatch a sandwich right out of the hand of someone sitting down to lunch, and I knew it wa s looking to see if I was going to be a source of food. I took some trail mix into the palm of my hand and made eye contact with the bird. It didn't take long before it was eating right out of my hand, I still remember the sharp talons of his (her?) claws and tried to keep from reacting, knowing that the moment would be over if I didn't stay calm.
We never saw much wildlife at altitude up there, but then again, there isn't much to eat during the winter. We saw deer occasionally, mostly in the distance, and in thr summer we were sometimes treated to seeing bighorn sheep nearby. But mostly it was just a few humans enjoying the wilderness experience by ourselves. Birds are another story, however. The jays and larger birds, like ravens, are ubiquitous in the winter months, however.
There are moments when I really miss being up there and enjoying the beauty surrounding us, but it's harder these days to make myself push the limits of my ability. That's probably because I am getting older by the day. Little incremental changes are now more noticeable as I spend less time exercising. I am happy for all the many years I spent outdoors and exploring the High Country. Now I am content to keep my excursions short and sweet.
It's Super Bowl Sunday, the 60th time they will play the top two teams against each other. I well remember when Daddy would watch the game and how much he loved football. I was not exactly indifferent, but I didn't really care who won or lost, or even paid much attention to it. I do remember realizing, when I lived in Colorado, that on a beautiful winter's day, I might be one of the very few people outdoors, while hordes of people gathered around indoors to watch, eat the requisite food like barbequed chicken wings, pizza, and (of couse) beer. Not much has changed in half a century, when it comes to the Super Bowl menu, I guess.
I went looking for a Super Bowl quotation from the BrainyQuote website and, as usual, I spent an hour thinking and perusing them. But somehow this one from Rabindranath Tagore caught me:
I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy. --Rabindranath Tagore
I figure that quote sums up my current moment. I am writing this post out of service, not because I particularly want to, and here is a perfect ending for an eclectic post. I still need to get up and prepare for the Sunday breakfast I'll share with John, and I need to be ready for the rain as well.
How about you? What will you do with this one perfect day in your life? I always love to hear from my readers as to how you're doing and what's happening in your life today. Until we meet again next week, dear friends, I wish you all good things. Be well.

Ah, yes, the Super Bowl. I won't be watching. I hardly know who is playing BUT I do know the location--Levi Stadium--very well. Or, I guess I should say I know of its exact location as we drive by the Levi's Stadium exit on Hwy 101 just past San Jose and right on the border of Santa Clara, a few times every year. And, with our numerous trips this past year to see grandkids and for Terry's treatment at Stanford, we have zipped past the exit A LOT. But to attend an event? No, haven't ever been there.
"What will you do with this one perfect day in your life?" Nothing terribly exciting, DJan. I made waffles for us this morning. Was actually up about 5:30, so put the last of our Christmas away , plan to check bills, and wash clothes later. But I enjoyed your hiking memories and the bird eating out of your hand. Hope you have a lovely Sunday!
I forgot to mention: DH will watch the Superbowl. I won't... watching football on TV is not my thing. However, I do like to watch some of the Olympic events.
Of course I will be watching the Super Bowl! My team is playing in it!
But I would be sort of watching it anyway. Even when I don't care who wins, I consider it cultural literacy. The talk and media will be all about the game, the commercials, and the halftime show. I like to be able to form my own opinion and have some first hand knowledge.
As for today, we finally got a full night's sleep, so we are just getting going. We'll have a light breakfast and then go over to the park for my mile walk. Then I'll prepare a little light food for later, nothing fancy. Jill is coming over to watch with us, since Jake will be with friends and otherwise she is now an empty nester. It's nice that she still seeks out her old parents for company. But all we, and she, really want is a quiet place to watch and hopefully enjoy the game. No parties for us.
Have a good day, and check in on the Big Game (and the Olympics). GO HAWKS!
This day isn't feeling too perfect. I went shopping in the bitter cold. I mean, of course, not in the store. But the trunk door wouldn't stay open when I was trying to get the bags inside.
Sixtieth Super Bowl. I remember the first few. If I remember correctly, the Packers won the first two, and then the AFC won a couple. By the end of the 70s or early 80s, I stopped following football.
As for snowshoeing, I loved it. And I have had chickadees and nuthatches eat out of my hand. It was thrilling although I guess not as great as your experience with something larger.
Love the story of the jay getting food from your hand. I follow a Portland woman who had a chickadee that would eat mealworms out of her hand. As a native Seattleite who now lives in a neighboring state, I feel obligated to watch today's Superbowl. The last time I watched, it didn't turn out too well for them so hoping for a better outcome.
Since I've been deleting photos I've looked at some of my old hiking photos. We had a blast. In the summer it was alive with birds up in the meadows.
I don’t follow much sports, but I wanted to see the half time show. Unfortunately I missed it. Maybe next year!
We don't watch football so I don't even know who won. We had a lovely Sunday. Andy cooked for us and Noah and his wife Hanna. I helped make Valentine boxes for the Great Grands and that was fun! Monday we just got back from Fargo, Far Guy had a biopsy of the twio nodules in his Thyroid and we will get the results in about a week.
I am resding this on Monday evening. I will teach a writing class tomorrow so I have been working on my lesson plans. I teach senior adults to write aboout their lives. I had someone cancel today so I have an opening if anyone wants to join us. I also visited my holistic physical therapist today. She does wonders fo my aches and pains, much more than than the doctors I have seen. She works on the whole body and is a talented and knowledgeable therapist. We are having better weather after a snow storm one weekend and an ice storm one weekend. I, too, love to look back at the photos of my life and see those loved ones who have gone on. I didn't watch the super bowl. My husband was a football fan, but I have never been one. It is a violent sport and I just can't watch it.
